Not a bad hotel, stayed in the "economy rooms" which really are not much different from the other rooms they had (we looked at them all). my only complaint is the showers, they really need to fire the cleaning staff. The rest of the staff was very helpful and friendly. Rooms are basic, bed, tv, coffee/tea pot. I dont normally travel to see the hotels but if your they kind of person who likes to hang at the hotel the lobby has a nice sitting/snack area and there is a good bar. You are a block from the forbidden city and palace gardens. Right outside the hotel is the local scene you can sample street food and a small grocery. As with any hotel taxi and tourist buses abound but have the hotel staff find you transportation Bejing is full of "black" taxis. Basically if they follow you trying to convince you to ride with them DONT!!! a real taxi driver will ask once if then and be on their way.

Pleasant surprise... accomodations in Chinese Room very pleasant. Only problem was low lighting (difficult for putting on make up). Clean, no difficulty with obtaining extra towels when needed. Enjoyed the proximity to Forbidden City, etc. Short cab rides away from other attractions. Beds firm but not uncomfortable. And loved to walk the real Chinese streets, especially the one north of the hotel. Tried several restaurants in the district and no problem with language, you just point to the picture and laugh with the staff when they watch you use the chopsticks. Dining room appeared to be buffet, so you had to pay for all (not to bad). we didn't ask to see if we could order ala cart. But we enjoyed the street restaurants so much it didn't matter. One warning, watch the tours (and the cab drivers). There are several low cost ones, but found we spent more time at the 'museums and shops' than at the attractions. And yes, you are pressured in to buying. Just stay firm. Stuff is cheaper at the markets and you can bargain more. One tour promised us the Ming tombs but were taken to a side sections with little to see. Drove by the real spot after and wish we had insisted on going there, because we ended up somewhere in or near the Olympic Village getting 'free' foot massages and lots of pressure to buy 'secret' Tibeten herbal soaks by so called Tibeten doctors who could read our palms. would rather have seen the tombs and payed for my own massage later. Would stay here again unless we wanted to try something different in another area. but definitely appreciated the low cost and proximity to what we wanted to see.

Stayed for 13 nights in this hotel in October 2008. Room ok, but a bit small. Fridge and safe provided, also teamaking facility. Bed very hard, got used to it. Bathroom ok, but shower tended to leak onto floor. Lighting very dim in room, bought bulbs and replaced them. Air conditioner in ceiling, but heating function did not work, however room was warm enough. Don't expect too much and you will be ok. Located in very Chinese part of town, little English spoken, but you will get by. Handy location for buses, also plenty of taxis. Not far to Forbidden City and Tien'anmen Square. Bit noisy from street at night, had to jam windows tight to try and keep out noise. In general, Chinese people very friendly and nice, they will make the effort to help you. As usual, make sure your taxi has a meter, or else agree a price before the journey. Taxis are cheap. We used buses and subway a lot, very cheap and you mix with the Chinese. Be careful crossing roads, pedestrians don't get priority even on a green light, you will get used to dicing with the traffic. Restaurant in hotel average, we tended to eat out. Overall, we had a brilliant time in Beijing, would return, and would stay in the Red Wall hotel again, but maybe ask for a (quieter) room at the rear of the hotel.
