I loved the historic building. It is located just across from the Teatro Nacional at center of downtown on a nice square making very close to everything. The staff was very attentive. No air conditioning but ok because you have a cool breeze day and night. The bed was hard but reasonably comfortable. Good breakfast buffet and served in a lovely, bright dining room on the top floor of the hotel. The only drawback is the noise from the street but when I got there live guitar music filled the plaza and the atmosphere was great.

I have been traveling to Costa Rica for many years but had never stayed at this famous landmark, so when I saw it as an option on Travel online I was pleased. I was down for two days only to do some work with two Tico friends of mine who live in SJ. When I arrived at check-in, the hotel initially gave me a tiny dark room with no view, despite the Travel online email saying "city view", and would not change it without a fight. Later, when my friends arrived for our meeting, the front desk informed us of a policy not allowing anyone but me in to my room. I am well aware of the problems SJ hotels have trying to control prostitute traffic, and the general rule that hotels loosely enforce about visitors, but I never thought I'd see this applied to me (a 40 year old woman) and my two extremely well-educated, professional male friends and business partners. Even after quietly explaining that I had flown 2000 miles just to meet with these two (my computer and everything I needed was set up in my room), they just shook their heads. I can guarantee you that if my associates were North Americans there would have been no problem, and nor would they have dared to speak to them as they did in Spanish, using slang, etc. I was so embarrassed and ashamed that I had put my friends in a position to be treated so badly, by fellow-Tico's no less. Add that to the giant cockroach in the bathroom and the depressing state of the room and the rest of the building, the non-stop noise from the plaza and no AC,and I would give my experience here a negative-star review if possible.

THIS HOTEL IS EXTREMELY WELL LOCATED, THE STAFF WAS KIND AND KNOWLEDGABLE,FOOD WAS GOOD,THE PIANO PLAYING IS A VERY CLASSY DETAIL, THE COMPLEMENTARY BREAKFAST BUFFET IS ONE OF THE BEST I'VE HAD IN MY LIFE. HOWEVER, THE ROOMS WERE TOO SMALL, NO AC, THE TV OPTIONS WERE VERY LIMITED, THE BATHROOMS WERE WAY TO SMALL WITHOUT WINDOWS,THE TOILETS WERE TOO OLD, WIDE AND TALL. GREAT STAY FOR THE PRICE, NICE RESTAURANTS NEAR BY ESPECIALLY THE "SPOON" EATERY

WE STAYED AT THAT THIS HOTEL THE WEEK OF 1/25/2009 IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL HOTEL , HOWEVER BEWARE THIS HOTEL HAS NO AIRCONDITIONING. ALSO THE DIESEL TRUCKS RUN OUTSIDE OF ERTAIN ROOMS AND THE FUMES ARE PRETTY BAD, WHICH MADE SLEEP NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE. OTHER THAN THAT THE HOTEL WAS VERY NICE.

  • Stay away. Unless you get suite with air cond.

The Hotel is attractive. The staff was pleasant. However, forget SLEEPING. Our 2nd floor room overlooked the plaza and we could not believe the noise all night long. At around 4am things started settling down except for the occasional scream. We should have moved to another hotel except that none were available. The only option for this hotel is the air conditioned suite. Regardless, I would look for another hotel if possible.
