  July of 2009 we had a lovely visit. The hotel is close to Broadway shows and the Gray line tour route as well as Rockefeller Center.We had called the hotel to get Taxi info. from the airport. We were deferred to the Concierge who was very helpful. He told me he could answer any other questions after we arrived. We arrived on Sat. evening in time to check in and rush off to a Broadway musical. We discovered tha the concierge works from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tues. to Sat. We left Wed. at noon.   This hotel is on a side street from the busier ones where the Sheraton or Hilton are located. When I first walked in the lobby, I was surprised at how small it seemed, along with the desk area. The elevators were adequate, but overall the common areas were nice but nothing super fancy. I was extremely pleased with my room, however, absolutely huge! Great tv, desk, and bed. The bathroom was pristine and the decor in the room is very chic. I might note, for families especially, that there is only one vending area and it is below the lobby. They do offer 24 hour room service, but its pricey. I never visited the dining room; however, it looked very nice.

  To say that my stay was disappointing is an understatement. Our room was spacious but looked and felt dirty and dingy. The paint and plaster was coming off the wall and window area. We also had some tile come up on the restroom floor. Our alarm clock had a stain on it and the television was awful and extreamly out dated. Most disappointing was that when I voiced my concern to the front desk he was dismisive of me and did nothing to make my stay better. While I was in their business center using the computer the employee in the office next door was on the phone with an inappropriate conversation. She was cursing and talking about situations a customer should not have had to listen to. It is safe to say that I will never stay again and I will tell everyone who asks me about it to not stay there.

  I last stayed at the Flatotel about 8 years ago and loved it. Unfortunately, it does not appear that the company that owns it has invested in maintaining it very well. The two working passenger elevators were very slow and received lots of negative comments from the full load of passengers that often seemed annoyed at having to stop at every floor and squeeze a few more guests in. My room was one of the smaller ones they offer and was very dark, even with all the lights on ;a desk lamp, two sconces/reading lamps over the bed and one floor lamp. There was too much mold around the tub area to ignore and the peg meant to hold your bath-towel within reach of the tub/shower was coming out of the wall did not hold anything. There was a coffee maker and small refrigerator but not even a bottle of purified water to greet you. Between the lobby and the elevators, there was a "security" desk that had a sign proclaiming it the Room Key Check desk, but I never saw anyone actually at the desk, even when I arrived late in the evening - 11:00 or later. On the positive side, everyone I had to deal with on staff went out of their way to be helpful, but I will not return to the Flatotel until I hear they have undergone an updating.
