My wife and I had a wonderful experience at the Sagamore. The staff was curteous and very helpful. The lake provided plenty to do over a long weekend. The room was comfortable and served its purpose. We had no complaints. Both of would gladly go back.

When we got there, the check-in was easy enough but once we got to building 7 in the Lodge area of the resort, we knew we were in trouble when we had to go down a flight of stairs, through a musty smell to get to our room. We opened the door to a cramped room and when we opened the curtains, we saw 10 feet of earth. The room was a pit, literally and figuratively. We went back to the front desk and requested a better room. That was in building 2. It was first floor so you could see out but it was an old, dark, poorly furnished room. When the iron was plugged in and the hair dryer was used, the circuit breaker would blow (happened 4 times). The final insult was a hidden $18/day charge that is added to the bill; it's a on the back of one form when you check-in. I asked to have it removed on check-out and was refused. We hated the place.

We travel with a large group consisting of 10 adults and 12 kids ranging in age from 2-19. We were looking forward to a grand weekend before the holidays, but I have to admit, we left feeling disppointed. Check-in was fine. Our condos - VERY dated, with unattractive old cabinets, drapes, couches, rugs - unimpressive decor in general. The bathroom was the only updated nice part about the room. The bathroom was spacious, new and clean. The bed was comfortable, but two doubles were crammed into one room - very tight. We ate at the pub. It looked good, as did the menu, but the food was blah, service was VERY slow, to say the least. It took us about 3 hours total to be seated and fed. Anyone with kids knows how that can end up! However, they did have neat little placemats and crayons for the kids to color. The complimentary bread baskets with garlic butter was AWESOME though. Activities were basically - nothing. There was a kids program (you pay a fee for this), and I have to say that was something well-liked by our group. There is a little playground, and they took the kids out in the snow, which was nice. They also allowed my 2 year-old to stay, which was great. However, we had to call in a "babysitter" - an extra worker to help watch her, and an additional fee was involved - worth it though, in my opinion. The childcare staff was really good. The best meal was breakfast in the grand ballroom, which I would highly recommend. The shop was nice, but very overpriced. We felt that this getaway was pretty much overpriced and boring. We may try it again during spring or summer when there is more to do.

The vaunted Sagamore has the prestigious plaque at the front door - Leading Hotels of America but it is not at that caliber. Check in started a bad experience. After driving six hours, we checked in and were given the keys to a condo which was already occupied. We were given access and walked in on another family. We left our sons at the front of the condo and drove a distance back to the reception area. Reception Desk offered no recovery; there was no accountability.
The Sagamore had advertised there were groomed x-country trails; there were none. Also nothing to do in the evening for adults.
House keeping came at 3pm. The drapes in the living room were taken down when we arrived and left in a heap for two days. No DVD player as advertised and we had brought a few DVDs. We were given a brochure at check-in with instructions for cable and On-Demand. No On-Demand.
The spa is first class as is The Trillium (restaurant).
Bottom line: use the spa, visit the restaurant and stay some place else!

We went to the Sagamore about 10 months ago and are going again in one month. I will admit it is a bit too expensive and in the late fall there isn't hardly anything to do here, but, for 2 days we enjoyed it. We had the romance package which included one dinner and one breakfast and we stayed in the lodge suite which I loved. It is so big and has a small kitchen and fire place and small balcony. I was able to get up very early and have my coffee and read and not distrub my husband who likes to sleep late. This wouldn't be possible if you stay in the main hotel. Be prepared that in the late fall there isn't many places to eat either and the prices are way toooo high in price. But, for some reason we enjoyed it! We went with the mindset that it was going to be a quiet vacation and not much to do, so maybe that is why we enjoyed it. To be honest we can't afford a real vacation to an island, so, for now, this is our vacation. The hotel is very pretty and full of history. Also, in the summer there is so much to do, but, for the price in the summer you can fly to an island! It is cheaper in the late fall also. SO, give it a try if you like a very, quiet place!!
