  I was walking towards the front desk to check in and I felt like I was disturbing the 2 women behind the front desk talking wiht a young man on the other side (all employees). I was approached with a ""checking in?"" not hello, welcome to howard johnson..... the other woman proceeded to start reading her book and finally got up to get my cards swiped for our room. I am assuming these were employees but neither one of them were wearing uniforms just their daily casual clothes.I made some lame excuse and proceeded to not check in and went elsewhere because the 1st impression of this hotel's employees was not good and I did not want to go any further. The Suites at Sunchase is where I stayed and this place is great !!! Staff was very friendly and the suites are very clean.

  Nice Howard Johnson property. The price fit our budget. Location was good. Would prefer to have been right on the beach, but hotel is situated only a block or so from the water. Room was nice and quite large: two queen beds, refrigerator, microwave, sink & cupboards (kitchen area). Plenty of room to walk around. We had a ground floor room which made it very convenient to load and unload our car from the back door of our room. Manager (Pam) was very nice. First, we were placed in a handicapped room (not needed). She made the change without any hassles and even checked out the room we were being moved into personally. Actually made the cleaning staff go back over the room. Humidity is always a problem on the gulf coast. We utilized the dryers prior to our departure and it worked great to get our towels and swimming gear dry before heading home. Swimming pool was small, but not many people vacation to Padre to swim at the hotel. We went to swim in the ocean. Jacuzzi was good. Continental breakfast was mediocre. Cereal, doughnut, little muffins, oranges, bananas, along with bagels, juice, milk and coffee. Again, nice property for the price. Good location and close to many of the attractions of Padre. Cheers!

  The facility is beginning to show its age, but the staff was working very hard to clean, paint and update, etc. The management and staff are all very friendly and helpful. The cleaning staff did an excellent job on our room everyday. Spring Break was ending as we arrived so the accomodation was very quiet. Many very good restaurants within walking distance as was shopping ,etc. The breakfast nook was kept clean and well stocked, newspapers and tv in the area to catch up on the news each morning. Rooms were very large and comfortable, beds were pillowtop and very comfortable, the air cond. worked great. There was a slight musty odor when we first arrived but the a/c took care of that, this is a tropical seaside area afterall. It is obvious that the management and staff are trying very hard to keep the facility maintained and clean, They were steamcleaning carpets in the rooms the day we were leaving! We will stay here again next spring.

  The room smelled moldy. that air from the ac was moldy and so were some of the walls. the carpet was cold and felt unclean. the door to the balcony ...

  The room smelled moldy. That air from the AC was moldy and so were some of the walls. The carpet was cold and felt unclean. the door to the balcony was rotten. I expected better for $*.

  Pictures need to be updated. My family and I checked in a little after 5:00pm. Wanted to give the hotel enough time to have our reserved room ready after a long day at the water park. When we arrived, there seemed to be confusion and heard the front desk receptionist ask house keeping if our room was ready, the reply was it was not ready. After a few moments, the lady at the front desk tells us out room number, after checking in to our room. We found the bathroom semi-clean and many of the fixtures broken. The vanity light was not working, the exhaust fan was not working and looked as if they had installed it for looks only and not for use purposes, the tub had the drain plug broken (my wife was not able to take her hot bath), the toilet was loose, and there were many holes that were not fixed in the room. After we all took a shower, we left early evening, told the front desk clerk the problems we found and would like them fixed, we asked if maintenance was on sight andwere told they were on sight, the lady pretended to be writing all our compalints. Later (after 11:00pm) when we came back, we noticed non of the requests were fixed. The ice, soda, candy machines were all broken. At check out time we expressed our displeasure and seemed to be dismissed by the front desk. I will not stay at SPI HJ hotel again. The charge per night is over over $*. One would expect much more for that price per night. The Hotel investor or investment group should reinvest money into this property that has great location. It makes the investor and management look sub par.
