First I should say that I enjoyed my stay in Birmingham and the La Quinta was overall fine. But, I had some issues during the stay. First when checking in to the hotel the room assigned did not include a king size bed. I found this out when I went into the room and also I noticed the room hadn't been clleaned yet. I think the cleaning staff was working on that floor and had not made it to the room yet. When asking at the front-desk about getting a new room with a king-size bed they indicated that a king size bed was not available even though I had that in my confirmed reservation. I should clarify that in the end they did have a room available with a king I just had to complain long enough for it to suddenly become available in the computer. Also, the room was supposed to be a non-smoking room and was even labelled that way but it was definely used as a smoking room often. I don't fault the hotel too much for this since they can't control what people do in the room but at some point they should either clean it out entirely or relabel as smoking room. The ice maker on the floor I was on was broken and so we had to go to another floor to get ice. That wasn't a major issue however. I did appreciate having internet available for free. Since I spent the previous night in a Sheraton and they wanted $12.95 per night for internet access this was good. I know I listed a few issues I encountered with the hotel but overall I had a good stay and it was probably worth the price especially compare to what others charged.

It definitely was not the worst hotel I've stayed in for the price range. I found the staff nice. The room was clean and the beds were more comfortable than any other hotel of the same calibur I've stayed in. The down part was that when we went to go swimming the staff told us the pool was closed, but there was no sign or anything about it being closed at the pool.

Despite having requested a nonsmoking room we were assigned a smoking room- they were booked so there was not a possibility of making a switch. The front desk clerk was apologetic but that was not much consolation. The room had no shampoo, the towels were thin and although we had a coffemaker in the room there was no coffee pot. The elevators were dirty, beat up and the carpet was nasty. The carpet in the corridor leading to the elevators was loose, wrinkled and worn. Overall is twas a depressing property.
