Recently spent a weekend getaway at the Hotel St. Francis with family. The hotel staff were very professional and accommodating. We had drinks at the Secreto bar during the evening with a mature crowd and lunch at the Tabla de Los Santos located conveniently on the bottom floor. I highly recommend the lemon and garlic chicken plate. The hotel has just recently completed a renovation and remodeling project. Beautiful fireplace located in the main lobby will probably provide a very peaceful place to sit and gather during the winter months. Was able to enjoy a relaxing evening with drinks on their patio located in front of the Hotel St. Francis. An excellent place to people watch. Rooms were very large with a historic presence. New flat screen TV's with DVD players. Loved the beds and pillows. Many local venues were within walking distance to include the Santa Fe Artist market, the NM History Museum and the Cathedral. Parking is located both on the premise and across the street which reduces stress levels since downtown Santa Fe is limited in parking spaces. Within a block of the hotel is of course Starbucks for your morning java fix.

The ambience of the old hotel is gone. The lobby, bar, restaurants are all closed. Yu enter and register through a side door, must take circuitous routes to get to the room. The rooms are small, but this was OK when you could relax in the grand lobby, in front of the fireplace. No more. Status is NOT prominently posted on their website. A reservation can be made without seeing the link to ""our exciting renovation"". Staff was indifferent when I expressed my dismay upon arrival. Since I was within the guarantee window, I had no choice but to stay. There are other better choices within a reasonable price range at this time.

Built about 100 years ago, the hotel maintains its early 20th century charm and nostalgia. This is a place where you can easily imagine Teddy Roosevelt strolling the halls. Its about 2 blocks from the historic Plaza of Santa Fe. All in all I enjoyed my stay. Granted the floors are a bit creaky in places, the windows look to be original, and some of the furniture looks like it has been antiqued in-place by long use. The elevator still has a manually operated door with a great brass cage on the inside. When built, guests were intended to use the grand stair case to reach their rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors. There is a large lobby with a streetside porch for morning coffe or afternoon drinks. My single room was cozy by modern standards, but was well appointed. The sink basin was by the foot of the bed and there was a step up into a small separate toilet/bath room. The classic iron framed bed was comfortable. During my stay the dinning room, room service, and the afternoon tea were shut down in preparation for renovations. There was a display in the lobby outlining the proposed remodel which is suppose to be completed by Summer 09. Check before booking.

I have yet to decide if I will stay here again on successive visits. For the location, the price is terrific. It's a toss-up between the St. Francis & the Inn of the Governors for the price - however, though a lot of the rooms at the Inn feel like a motel (hotel rooms open to outside - you have to pay ""extra"" for a nicer room ""in"" the hotel) it includes a decent breakfast buffet; whereas the St. Francis has no inclusive meals or freebies. What the St. Francis does have is a lot of charm - however, that's because it's a very old building. Old buildings have old pipes & hence, we had a lot of hot water issues. Our tv also mysteriously wouldn't turn on every night & we had to call maintenance to come up each time. Supposedly, they're entirely renovating over this winter, including new furniture/TVs/etc. The beds were comfortable, though the floors are squeaky & we had some rather heavy-footed people in the room above us. The staff was very friendly & accomodating. They had a very delicious ""afternoon tea"" that I would recommend, even if you don't stay there. Also, they have a very lovely fireplace in lobby - when they actually have it on.

We come to Santa Fe quit often and stay at different hotels each time. On our visit to St Francis things fell short. The bed was not that confortable and the widows in the room would not lock. When we went to check out the process was long and tidious. And they charged us to park in their lot. I would have payed less to pay the meter. There are tons of hotels in Santa Fe so we would be back.
