My friends and I arrived at this Howard Johnson's expecting a "Standard Room with 2 double beds." I was aware that the room may or not be smoking (though I expected a non-smoking room considering I hadn't requested Smoking). When we arrived at the hotel, the manager informed us that Travel on line had requested a smoking room for us. Ok. We were directed to a room where, upon opening the door, we were greeted with a blast of cigarette and cat urine stench. We attempted to air out the room by opening the windows and leaving the door open, to no avail. I questioned the manager about the conditions, and he insisted that there was no way to change our room, that the hotel was fully booked, that Travel on line had specifically requested the smoking room for us, and that refunding our money was impossible (we hadn't even asked). I called Travel on line where the representative pointed out that a smoking room was a possibility when we booked (the issue was not so much the smoking room status, but the uninhabitability due to the foul odor), but eventually agreed to speak to the manager about it. After several attempts the representative gave up, claiming that the manager had repeatedly verbally accosted him, stating "we don't give refunds" and hung up on him. The representative asked that I speak to the manager again, though I'm not sure why. After some wrangling, we were switched to another (still foul-smelling) room. Non-functional dresser, no washcloths, mothball stench, fan doesn't work. The room was also pretty expensive! (/night) I will NEVER stay here again!
