  We stayed at the Hampton Inn, in Aiken, SC, while visiting friends. We are familiar with the Hampton and it is our hotel chain of choice all over the country. I find it to be consistent and a bit of luxury while traveling. We booked this room with the expectation of a luxurous stay, while on a long trip. I was appalled at the condition of this hotel. We booked a King suite, with whirlpool. The room was dark and unappealling. Not even a flower in sight. The TV was old, and I mean old .. with terrible sound. But the worst was the bathroom. The surround in the tub and in the whirlpool was cracked and had mold. The caulking was crumbling in the whirlpool and there was mold in the overflow valve. There was a cigarette burn in the sink. The spigots to fill the whirlpool were not operating properly. 2 of the four lights in the bathroom didn't work. They had removed the hardwired smoke/fire detector from the ceiling and installed another on the wall, but didn't seal the hole left by the removed fixture in the ceiling. Same with the new shower rod. They took down the old one and left the hardware from the old one in the wall. All in all this hotel was old and worn, and a huge disappointment. I must say that the staff, and particularly the young man on the desk when we checked in, were wonderful. As always, a credit to the chain. One other negative note, about 9:00 a.m. we had a knock on the door, and it was maintenance wanting to fix the mold and caulk. I think that would have been better left to when we
