We stayed at the Claremont in December of last year. Friends told us we got a great rate, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We booked two rooms (one for my husband, baby and I, the other for my mother-in-law and 9yrold daughter) and they were very spacious and comfortable. The hotel staff were amazing - very friendly and willing to accomodate in any way. The valet parking was great - we were in and out a lot, but they were happy to help us each and every time and even knew our names by the end of our three day stay. Christmas was a special time at the hotel. In addition to the beautiful Christmas decorations, there was a huge replica of the hotel made of gingerbread and snow machines which periodically blew fake snow out over the entire lobby. Our nine-year-old daughter (who coming from Australia, has only seen snow a few times in her life) was absolutely thrilled. She was also impressed with the heated pool - although it is outdoors, it was warm enough for her to swim in the middle of winter! I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. It was a real treat for us. The only problem with this hotel is that it set our expectations too high - we visited New York City next, and the 2 bedroom apartment that we rented did not come close to the standards set at the Claremont!

This huge hotel was built in 1906. It has beautiful architecture and is located in a fun area of Berkeley. Great restaurants and shopping are a hilly, but not too long, walk away. There is a terrific health club with lots of tennis courts, outdoor swimming pool and good facilities. The rooms were large and comfortably furnished. It could be a little cleaner. The staff was generally very helpful. We were surprised when checking in, by a 24 dollar manditory fee for use of the health facilities and internet access. Orginally,we were told it was 24 dollars per day but we were only charged 24.00 once for a 3 night stay. There is a charge for parking which was expensive..The first 1/2 hour was free and then it was 4.00 per hour for anything longer. No allowance for being a hotel guest. We loved Berkeley and would consider going back to this hotel, now that we know how it works.

I stayed at the Claremont recently while visiting my son who attends Cal. The only thing that is 5***** about this hotel is the cost! I upgraded my room to a bay view. There was NO bay view. The room was similar to what you woud expect to find in a cheap motel! My son was charged $24 each time he came to visit me (for parking) I was charged $25 per day resort fee and $25 spa fee on check in! I was not aware of these charges when making the reservation! In addition, $25 each day to park my car. I sat is Jordan's (the restaurant) while my son had breakfast and did not eat. They still charged me $100, $50 per person for Sunday brunch. I don't mind paying if the quality is evident. It was not. I don't recommend unless you want a Travelodge at Ritz prices.
