Excellent breakfast, especially the made to order omelets, eggs and waffles. Excellent, competent chef at breakfast. Fruits, breads, cheeses were outstanding. Very helpful front desk who assisted us with a lengthy flight confirmation process. Friendly and helpful staff, especially in the business center. Excellent pool area, although the Cortina de Agua waterfall was shut down part of our stay. Rooms were typical of Latin American hotels, very basic. The bedding and curtains were dated and faded. Maid service was a bit sketchy as we would be gone for 5 hours and the room was still not made up when we returned. We found 2 roaches in the bathtub the first day but this was addressed aggressively by management and we never had another issue. Excellent meals from in-hotel restaurant on the first floor. Overall, I would recommend this hotel.

The Mar Hotel is not, I repeat, not a 4 or 5 star hotel. Maybe a 2 star would describe it better. Imagine a Motel 6, and you're close to the right idea. My room -- an upgraded business room -- was dark (a single buzzing light bulb lighting most of the room), smelled of mold (really bad), offered a double sized bed that was about 18 inches off the floor, a toilet that ran all night, paper thin walls with a screaming baby next door, and a tile floor that was filthy. It was so stinky that I could only stand it a single night. I had to remain at the Mar Hotel due to a conference, or I would have just picked up and moved all together. As it was, I requested the Admiral Suite for an additional 95 Reals per night. That brought my total to about 210 Reals per night -- way more than it was worth. I have only been to Brazil once before, to Rio, and my apartment there was much nicer than the Mar Hotel. To be fair there are three redeeming qualities to this hotel... the staff was very friendly, the pool is fine, and it the hotel is close to the beach (although watch out for sharks). Stay at the Mar if you like... just don't fall for the notion that it is a fancy hotel. Definitely not up to of US standards, let alone somewhere like Japan.
