The Aston Kauai Beach At Makaiwai is a clean and convieniently located ocean front hotel that has a small bar/lounge and resturant on site. This place is not fancy and will not elicit oohs or ahhs for fancy grounds or lavish pools but it's well maintained and tightly manicured. The rooms are nice and very well maintained with no stains or peeling paint, the bathroom is small by modern standards and is a one person at a time affair. The bed was good, it worked for my wife and me, what more can I say. There is a small fridge and in room safe along free high speed internet that is wired via cable modem with ethernet connection and NO WiFi. I have Verizon cell service and got 1/2 a bar and no 3G in my room, so thanks for the wired internet. Eventhough your on vacation you might like to work out. The fitness room is tiny with 2 treadmills, 2 stair climbers and a exerbike-no universal gym or free weights. So your'e better off doing press-ups and going for a run. There is an ocean front jogging path about 1/2 mile down the road.

The hotel was nicely kept, the room was clean, nicely decorated, quiet, and had a nice balcony which gave us a view of the beach. The beach is accessible right in front of the hotel, with a swimming pool and jacuzzi nearby. We even got free coffee downstairs in the morning. There are markets, stores, watersports, and sightseeing things right around ths area, and it is not too far to travel to the north or south of the island. A great deal!

We stayed at another Aston hotel in Maui, and it was great, but this property doesn't make the grade. We had several problems during our stay. The worst thing was the rooms have a strong mold/mildew smell. We tried other rooms, but they all have the smell. Our air conditioning was broken two of the three nights we stayed here. The shower was not cleaned. The photos on this Web site are old. The pool furniture is very worn. I wouldn't even want to sit on it. Two of us got sick after having breakfast in the restaurant. In it's prime, this was probably a nice resort, but it needs updating.

We upgraded to the ocean front room and it was worth the extra cash. Lanais are a little small, the bathroom's even smaller, but all in all, you get your money's worth. The view is gorgeous and you are within minutes of wonderful restaraunts and shops. The Coconut Marketplace is within walking distance next door. The rooms and pool were clean and the sfatt was very helpful. Take advantage of tours offered from the concierge or the marketplace. It is much cheaper than booking yourself over the phone. The restaraunts in the hotel are a little overpriced - skip the breakfast buffet in the AM and go next door to Eggbert's at the marketplace. The fitness room has a couple treadmills and some stairmasters - no free weights. You are so busy with other things on the island, you are really only there for showers and sleep. We would definately stay again.

The large hotel was only half occupied when we stayed there from Dec. 23 through Dec. 29, 2008, which meant we got a lot of attention from the friendly service staff. The rooms were large, clean, well furnished and comfortable, with our tiny balconies giving us a glimpse of the ocean. The beach right in front of the hotel is not for swimming, but pretty nice for walking and hanging out. We didn't use the pool, but the hot tub served us well on several nights. We liked the walking distance to shops and restaurants in town.
