This was a very dirty and dirty-smelling hotel. I am a social worker and am use to seeing clients in what are known as "single room occupancy" hotels; what most of you would think of as flop houses. This was like a flop house with a great view, for cost of over $200 a night. The carpet and drapes had decades worth of ground in dirt; the paint around the windows was chipped (and there were plenty of gaps in the closed windows). Can you believe no clock or clock radio in the room? No television (probably because the walls were so extremely thin, no one would be able to sleep at night). No tub in the room, no coffee maker, very ugly wallpaper, what they described as special "Hawaiian quilts" were nothing more than $10 polyester spreads that you'd get from a thrift store. Of course the shower had mildew. And get this, you couldn't sit on the toilet it the "usual" position as it was crammed so close to the wall, you had to sit on it sideways, with your legs and feet "sidesaddle" so you could fit on it. I've never encountered anything like that in my life.
If you are smart, you'll choose to stay in a bed and breakfast in the town of Volcano, which is only a few minutes away. The ones we saw when we went to town to eat looked charming and not as expensive. And if you hike the park, you'll see the killer view anyway while hiking. -

The hotel is located on the edge of the Kilauea crater and has excellent views, however the beds were extremely hard, the room was small with no telephone, TV or alarm clock. The staff, although professional was inflexible. Dining was okay but not worth the cost.
