The Chalfonte is not the place for everyone -- thankfully! If you are seeking well appointed, metropolitan rooms with all the bells and whistles -- forget the Chalfonte -- Cape May probably isn't for you either. Try Avalon! I never missed the absence of a television or phone in my room. The Chalfonte is about solitude. You come here to ride the rockers that grace the front porch. If you must watch TV it is available in the common areas. I admittedly enjoyed hearing some of the guests in the TV room watching America's Favorite Past-time. And you know your cell phone is never more than 3-feet away at any time. So, who needs a phone in the room? (Tip: you can pick up Internet service from the porch. Don't tell!) I visited in August and September. It was hot yet I was comfortable with just the ceiling fans and ocean breezes. I was concern about the shared bath arrangement but I never had trouble finding a free bath or shower. And if you prefer not to share the bath, rent a room with a private bath. I found the staff charming, helpful and accommodating. It impressed me that most of them knew me by name after our first meeting. The Magnolia Room may not be 5-star dining but it is a good value and the wait-staff friendly and attentive. Finally, I find the Chalfonte inspirational. The first week I spent there was to work on my book. It was perfect -- plenty of quiet hideaways. I was also driven to pull out my camera. If I were a painter, I would have pulled out my easel. But I'm not so I settled for enjoying the art exhibits. So, if you are looking for a getaway reminiscent of a Victorian seaside escape, the Chalfonte is it.

I found this Hotel-- a Guest House actually--on an online travel website. It wasn't rated, but I needed a place for a spur of the moment beach weekend, and took a chance. I recommend the hotel for single person because there is plenty of space to be alone or around others. There is a small bar, and library, TV room, dinning room. Breakfast was included. My room was sweet and comfortable.I had a super duper weekend in Cape May. I have to add -- the staff at this place were so friendly and helpful. Highly recommend it.
