This is a beautiful historic hotel in a great location. The hotel is across the street from Lake Lure's only public beach, which is charming and family-friendly. The beach also has waterslides, water balloon games and play equipment for the entire family. You can rent paddle boats, kayaks and canoes by the hour at the public beach. The hotel rooms are smaller than modern hotels, but the rooms are well-appointed with comfortable beds. Other reviewers complained about the lack of closets, but that was not a problem at all. We stayed in shorts and t-shirts, and did not need a closet anyway. The Beachside Grill served excellent food, and the hotel swimming pool was private and relaxing. It's a charming hotel in a beautiful mountain setting - and you even get actual room keys instead of magnetic cards.

We found this hotel completely by accident and we're glad we did. The room rate was very reasonable for a king sized bed room with a large jacuzzi. We're not sure what the 1-star guest is talking about either, we had a very pleasant stay. There is a huge porch lined with rocking chairs overlooking the mountain and lake. It's very peacful and coming outside first thing in the morning with a cup of coffee and listening to the quiet was wonderful. The one thing we really didn't like was that there was no refridgerator in the room. Since we stayed off season and nearby shops and stores close VERY early, it is sometimes hard to get a bite to eat after 8 PM. Eat before 8 PM! We found this out the hard way. We ate lunch very late one day and we were ready for dinner at 9:30 PM - NOTHING was open. The kind lady at the front desk did tell us that there was a supermarket about 3 miles down the road...so off we went! It certainly was NOT 4-star dining, but it was food. Each floor of the hotel is filled with wonderful antiques and paintings. It's definitely worth taking the time to walk around. Again, since we stayed off season there was no continental breakfast.

Lake itself incredibly scenic, dramatic mountains all sides. Sandy beach offers swimming, boardwalk, park across street from inn. VERY few beaches in NC mountains, so don't miss. Inn charming, lots history, service & housekeeping exceptional. I cannot relate to a previous 1-star review; much of that info false. Good free continental bfast, gourmet buffet lunch for under $7 and outstanding entrees for dinner. If looking to relax among antiques, in Jacuzzi or pool, with incomparable view -- maybe the best in all of NC -- look no further.

Standard room: This place is only good for honeymooners who will never leave the bed. No vending machines, one lamp with 60-watt bulb plugged into extension cord, NO CLOSET FOR CLOTHES, itty bitty MOLDY shower, wireless I/N in one very small area in the dimly-lit lobby. Stay somewhere else for a LOT less $$ and more amenities.
