On its website, the Eggemoggin Oceanfront Lodge claims to offer guests ?rustic luxury.? We discovered the lodge was ?rustic? but certainly not ?luxury.? Although the rooms were in fair condition, they were furnished with hard mattresses that made it difficult to sleep. In one of the beds, we discovered sand in the sheets and a thick layer of dust on the bed frame. The dining operation was disorganized. Dinner featured a beer keg on the porch, a partying crowd inside, and dirty dishes piling up everywhere. I had to continually get up and ask the staff about basic items like napkins and beverages. Our hosts seemed puzzled at our request for extra towels. When they finally brought them to our room, they brought only half of what we had asked for with no explanation. The thermostat for the bathroom heater was broken, causing it to run continuously all night. Also, the bathtub would not drain properly. Next morning, we found smashed food from the night before in the main lodge entrance; no one had taken the time to clean it up. The ?hearty continental breakfast? described on Eggemoggin?s website featured a small kitchen table overcrowded with a few basic breakfast items such as cut-up bagel pieces, banana chunks, fruit wedges, and tomato and onion left over from last night?s dinner. The juice (made from concentrate) had run out. The toaster would not operate properly. Once we returned home, I called the lodge managers to discuss our experience, and asked for a 50% refund. Instead of listening to my concerns, the owner argued each point, and tried to make me feel that we were being unreasonable. ?Well no one else has ever complained!? was her standard response. I got nowhere with her. So, my advice is ?read this and steer clear!?
