OVERALL: This is not a luxury resort - it is comfortable place to stay near Cabarete. The resort is focused on kitesurfing. You probably won't want to spend too much time in your room. The hotel is right on the beach and very close to 2 kite surfing schools. When I was there, the sea was pretty rough - not ideal for children looking to paddle. (The waves aren't of the surfing variety either, they break too close to the shore). You need to get to Playa Encuentro for surfing. Go at 7am as in the afternoon the wind changes to onshore and blows out the waves. FOOD: The italian is good, the mexican so-so. The buffet for lunch and dinner were surprisingly good as is the pizza in the snack area. Burgers are best if you go at off-peak snack time (when they make them individually for you)! ROOM: My room looked out over the sea, but the view was partially blocked by palm tree leaves. When I turned the ac off before the leaving the room (to save energy) the room did smell a bit. Not foul, but a definite plumbing issue. CLIENTELE: Mostly German, a few English and American. Mostly families and groups of kiteboarders. Not a party haven. SERVICE: I never figured out the rules for getting pool towels. There were two in the room when I arrived and the booklet said they were available poolside. (Not that I saw.) To get replacement towels you need to leave your towel in the shower and room service will replace. Of course if you're at the pool at the time they're doing room service...... Maybe it was me.... BAR SERVICE: A little slow given that they're not dealing with cash / accounts / credit cards.

I stayed at the Viva Wyndham with my friend from May 12th to May 23rd. It was a wonderful hotel, the people at the desk were always very friendly and helpful! We could exchange our room through another one easily (we prefered staying at the main building). The area was pretty nice with many plants, trees and flowers. The pool is big and clean, the beach just in front of the hotel. There are 3 restaurants offered: a reservation was required for the mexican (I didn't like the food there) and the italian (great food - especially the fish and the chicken) one only and a buffet-style restaurant that had a huge and good variety of different food and always a fresh salad bar! I haven't experienced any health issues with the food or the drinks (with ice) at all.. even at night, there is always a snack bar where you can get Pizza or other food anytime - just great! The activities offered were also great (tennis, dancing classes, gym, beachvolleyball and other games) - the animation team did a great job!! The evening shows were professional, the whole team almost always smiling! For tours I an recommend to compare the prices offered at the hotel with the private offerings at the beach - you can always work on the prices! All in all we had a great time there and I would stay there again!

I just returned from my third stay at the Viva Wyndham Tangerine (May 2-9, 2009). As always, it was a wonderful experience. When we arrived, the check-in was quite busy. We were told by other people in line that it was a Dominican holiday, and many natives were checking into the hotel for the long weekend. Even though there were about 50 people checking in, they were very efficient, and we were done in about 15 minutes. Because the hotel was crowded, we were not able to get our first choice of room. Instead, we were given an upgrade to ocean view in the main building. I had always chosen to stay in the outer buildings, because I was afraid there would be a lot of noise in the main building. To my surprise, the soundproofing was quite good, and we were not disturbed at all. The grounds of this hotel are just beautiful. There are flowering plants everywhere, a pond with turtles and a magnifient beach with crashing waves. The food is good. All inclusives are not gourmet, but the food is fresh, tasty and there is a good deal of variety. If they don't have anything you want, there is always a pasta bar that will give you a choice of pastas and a choice of sauce. The room was slightly smaller than the one in the outer buildings, but it was fine. The maid kept it immaculate. We asked her to wash our blanket, and she had it back to us that night, freshly laundered. The thing that stands out about Wyndham Tangerine is the staff. From the moment that we arrived and the bell boy said, ""Welcome home"", we were made to feel that we were the most important people there by every one of them.

The rooms are the difficult part. We had 2 rooms. One was in the 3100's which is the main building. Handles were missing off drawers, the A/C didn't work and the paint was peeling . The other room which was in the 2500's (2524) was clean the beds were better and the A/C worked. We all (3 adults and 2 kids) stayed in that room and the next day exchanged it for a junior suite in the 1100's. The room was great. The whole resort could use some paint and maintenance. HOWEVER the food, staff location, grounds and experience were great. People were wonderful with our children. Fight for the room change required some persistence and discussion with our signature rep. GiGi but all other concerns were handled well. X at the front desk was great. Complaints about repetitive food is somewhat true but the suppers each had a different theme (Arabian, French, Italian, Dominican, Mexician). I loved the food. The Snack bar was open late and 2 nights we ate at the a la carte restaurants. I would recommend staying at the Palace (which is new, on the grounds and shares everything with the rest of the resort) or up grading the room. We would love to go back. Oh and the Bahia de Cabarete (a non alcoholic drink) is fantastic.
