We traveled to Anguilla for a 4-night stay in November '07. We have traveled extensively in the Caribbean and were disappointed with Malliouhana. We had high expectations for the hotel based on the price being paid and the on-line/magazine reviews.

The location on Meads Bay was beautiful. We found the room to have luxuries such as Italian marble in the bathroom and Walnut closets, but they lacked the simple necessities. At the price paid for the room, the room did not have a coffee maker, television, alarm clock, or air conditioning in the bathroom. Turn down service did not happen unless a complaint was filed with the front desk. There was no feeling of a 5 star hotel such as: mints on the pillow at night, organization of toiletries when cleaning, or snacks by the pool. We even had a problem with ants in both the bathroom and in our bed - ARGHH!! Service staff at beach was unfriendly and unhelpful. We were actually told by one employee that they were "too tired" to put Hobbie Cat in the water. 10% service is automatically added to the room charge and the hotel staff doesn't act like they need to still earn that money.

Food was extremely expensive, even just lunch at the pool bar. A 20 hamburger that tasted horrible was the norm. We heard good reviews about the restaurant, but we weren't willing to risk 200 to find out for ourselves based on our lunch experiences.

We spoke with hotel management about the issues with our stay and they refunded us one night of our stay. While we appreciated this effort, we would still not recommend this hotel to friends or family. We still failed to see the value of our money spent.

Malliouhana is an ideal property for those who don't need to be entertained by activity, who enjoy walking on a pristine and uncluttered/uncrowded beach, and who are content to enjoy fine food and decent wine (some of the best in Anguilla and the Caribbean), comfortable and adequately spacious accommodations, and subtle luxury (e.g., there are more plush towels in the bathroom than one would ever use, bed linen (it appears) is changed daily, and there is a choice of comfortable places to sit indoors and out, and an ease in maintaining as much privacy as one wants. Some may be disappointed that there are no pool games, social events, chocolates on pillows and other "pseudo" accoutrements -- there are other islands and other properties for those who desire such things. Instead, Malliouhana provides a place to spend your holiday as you like and gives a confidence that necessary comforts will be provided. Particularly attractive to us is that there is a separate children's area and pool (that is to the same standards of the property generally), which means the main pools remain child-free. Bar service is provided around the pool, and an attendant is nearby for fresh towels. As elsewhere on the property, service is always available but not intrusive; the staff appear interested in ensuring guests have what they need and that they enjoy their stay. We consistently found staff in every department to be helpful and sincere. In case a reader thinks I am always effusive, the fact is that my wife and I are quite picky about what we want and the places we stay. Mallihouna happily gave us nothing to pick at, no matter how hard we looked. It is a rare find that will keep us coming back.
