My husband and I come up here as often as we can for the solitude and beautiful views of the Pacific Coast. Having stayed at a few of the other hotels on Moonstone Drive, my only regreat is that I hadn't known about San Simeon Pines sooner. I have been a faithful customer for more than 10 years now, and it's because of all of the wonderful "extras" at San Simeon Pines. These extras are the wonderful views. Sure, there are hotels down the road without any trees in front of them; and they're also loud from the traffic noise and that "great view" you get is always full of people walking by.
I would definitely recommend getting a room with a fireplace. Having a wood burning fireplace is also one the "extras" I enjoy due to the cool coastal weather. And as far as I know, all of the other hotels only offer gas fireplaces. And if you can get one, the cabins are the best. Cabin 83 is great since it has a private patio and you can hear the ocean through the trees. It's really a relaxing, cozy experience. The staff go out of their way for you, there's a good continental breakfast in the morning, no noisy hotels on eiher side of you.

Our friend locked her room key in her room. It is impossible to contact anyone after 10:00 The night bell ""hasn't worked for years"" and they do not answer phone messages. It was either sleep in the car or share my husbands and my bed. (A long uncomfortable night for all.) They did comp my friend for her room but not even an apology for our inconvenience, said it's not their responsibility if people can't keep track of their keys. No irons available, every activity including the pool closes at sunset and the vending machines are locked up after 10:00.

This "resort" is not what you bargain for. It is way overpriced for what you get - a very small old room in an old motel that has really no view of the ocean, but just a view of the street. The price is not right. Some good qualities are: nice staff, fair continental breakfast, and landscaped grounds. But I would stay in another place for sure - either down the road or at San Simeon.

Upon checking in, we were greeted by the proprietors who welcomed us like relatives! So pleased to see us and were brewing some fresh coffee right then! There is a permanent croquet course next to shuffleboard. Also there is a 9 hole golf course that we were told: "don't worry if you lose a ball or two, we'll find 'em when we mow the lawn!" Clubs can be borrowed at the desk. This is all included! The rooms are nothing extraordinarily fancy or anything, just simple decor, very roomy, clean, and charming with a kind of cabin feel with dark wood beams going across the white ceiling in our upstairs room. We had a working fireplace which was wonderful. Our room overlooked the pool and we could only barely hear the kids swimming in the pool the next morning after we woke up, so the rooms had pretty good sound insulation. There is a continental breakfast offered, but we didn't partake, instead enjoying brunch at a local restaurant just down the street. The location is nestled amongst pine trees but you can hear and see the ocean through those trees just across the road. There's a wooden boardwalk taking you along side the beach for a spectacular walk anytime of day or evening! If you're used to Bellagio-5 star hoiti-toitiness, this place might not be for you, but if you enjoy a little rustic, old style charm, this is it! We definately will be recommending this place to friends, and already plan on returning with our kids to stay again this time for a full weekend to take in additional local sights like Hearst Castle.

The San Simeon Pines is an older style resort with a lot of character. The rooms are bigger than most newer places. Our room had a cathedral ceiling. It was clean and well cared for. The breakfast was bare bones but fine. The main outstanding quality was the beauty and splendor of the surrounding grounds. Across the road was an buffer zone of windblown cedars, junipers, and other evergreens. The outlook on the cliffs offered a mesmerizing view of the Pacific with its heavy layer of marine mist and fog. Long stairs lead allow access to the beach. Up the road a ways is preserve for seals. We look forward to another visit. Come via route 46 - it affords a splendid vista from the hills down to the sea.
