A second floor balcony view looking over the green lawn and Stillwater River into downtown Orono IS a travel poster. Location, location, and the true desire to please their guests. Ten years ago this was a cheap dump to stay a night. But the new owners have made it a class act! Three impressionist renderings of Boston have replaced faded flower prints in a room we've had before. The latest upgrade has changed the bathrooms from aged chipped tiled utilitarian to faux Traverteen floors with curved shower rods and color co-ordinated decorator shower curtains. The exhaust fan is more than sufficient to keep long steamy showers from sneaking into the room. The pride of ownership shows. Day or night, the staff (including the housekeeping staff) could not be more considerate and friendly. Wifi now works in the rooms, but there is still a lack of outlets for keeping the laptop and cell phone charged. At Christmas time you shouldn't miss the floor to ceiling Christmas tree which dominates the glass walled and sunlit lobby. Having 3 kids go through U Maine we have stayed in many of the Hotels in the Greater Bangor area over the last 10 years. This is our favorite.

The Inn is older and it shows it, but it was also in a pleasant locale. I really enjoyed having a patio door open to the river and despite the age, it was cleaner than the Best Western, espcially the bathroom. I also loved the soaps, and the Internet connection was good . HOWEVER: they chose to cost-cut in all the wrong areas. 1. The shower didn't work properly. Despite remodeling the entire bathroom, they kept the old pullswitch linking shower and bathtub, and the valve was long since worn away. Half the water went to the showerhead; the rest just poured down the drain. And as other reviews have noted, the "hot" water was a misnomer. Warm water, yes, and enough of it - just. You got the feeling that the owners were trying to save money by keeping you from a long shower. 2. Do NOT stay in a "suite", unless there are no more than two of you and you are very, very loving. The double bed is just that, a double. Cozy spooning couples would probably be ok, but it was too small for us. And the sofa "bed" needed to be dragged out and listed in the "free" section of craigslist. There were springs missing, some of the supports were on the wrong side, etc. We just took the entire mattress out and put it on the floor. It helped - some. I took a suite because I wanted a coffee pot - full size: a detail I appreciate - and a fridge. If they'd just put these in every room I think it would be ok. Not doing so, and the meager breakfast, leaves you feeling cheapskated. I might maybe stay again, but not in a suite, and not without a coffee pot.

Having a balcony overlooking the Stillwater is a photo-op. When the fog lifted, the river was idyllic looking. I benefitted from the renovations-in-progress, and was in a spacious 1/2 suite. It was well equipped with a refrigerator, coffee pot and supplies and more. Having stayed at the U Inn many times before, I noticed the new, organic type shower curtain and the Earth Simple shampoos, soaps, etc. The staff are all friendly and helpful. I appreciate the little gym where I can walk when the weather outside is forbidding (there's an outside pool, only, so no swimming when it's negative 20 degrees outside!) Even though workmen were working on renovations in many rooms at the Inn, I never heard them (they worked very quietly and did not disturb.)

I was visiting this site to make a reservation at the University Inn because my wife and I have stayed there many times in the past and have always had very pleasant stays. We are both retired and we do a lot travel around New England and unlike many of the places we stay, the University Inn just seems to have real character and class. We find it so much nicer than those cold and sterile 'big-box' hotels. The staff there is very friendly and we have never had any trouble with plumbing. I look forward to getting back to Maine and staying at this hotel.
