My wife and I went to the Mayan Palace in Nuevo Vallarta for our honeymoon in late May 2009. We had a wonderful trip, but our impression of the resort was mixed. It was very clean and felt safe, and the staff was very friendly, but the resort was a bit overpriced. The food at the on-site restaurants was beautifully presented but mostly bland. The tastiest food they offered was the cheaper food at their cafe on the beach. Our suite was huge, but the bed and sofas were hard and uncomfortable. The gym was large and modern, with a full compliment of weight equipment, cardio rooms, etc. The resort is a bit isolated from the rest of Puerta Vallarta, but if you prefer lounging by the pool over taking in the local culture, you should feel right at home. You can also take day trips to the surrounding towns, which the on-site travel agent can help you arrange once you arrive. The optional time-share talk was better than most; they told us it would take about an hour, and it only ran over by about 30 minutes (for which we got 10% off our bill). The resort wasn't very crowded when we went, thanks to the flu and economy... but we met little old European lady who had been coming to the Mayan Palace for 4 years, and she said she usually had to get to the beach early if she wanted a place in the shade. We probably won't go back, just because we'd like to try other places if we happen to return to Puerto Vallarta... and if we want to stay at a 4 or 5 star resort, we would prefer to find one that isn't sprinkled with 2 or 3 star food and furniture.

This is a two star 'resort' with five star prices. There is no mini-bar, no room service after 12 so if you need a bottle of water at night - you can forget it. The rooms are very very basic - think motel. There is no fridge, kettle - so you essentially have to buy everything. The bed was average. The gym is very basic for the price of the rooms - there is no bench press. The only good thing is the pool - which is long and the outdoor activities. The resort is far away from everything. Unless you have a car, you feel stuck and isolated. Would recommend staying in Puerto Vallarta or staying in a hotel with a hotel amentities and a free shuttle to Puerto Vallarta, as cab rides one way are about 150-200 pesos.
