Hotel was not what we expected. There were only a few pieces of equipment in the workout facility, most of which, didn't work. The lazy river is the smallest I've ever seen. It actually is inside with the pool. Rooms were not very clean and and cleaning staff were not very nice at all. The outside pool was nice and the access to the ocean was great.

Had a very nice stay in this Hotel. Everything was within walking distance. The employees are very nice and very helpful. The rooms were very clean and tastfully decorated. My only ""negative"" is the size of the bathrooms. As with an older building, they are extremely small...but very clean. I would stay here again and recommend it greatly.

From the moment we pulled up to the curb the staff was wonderful--friendly and professional. Our room was large and comfortable and our bathroom had plenty of counter space. It is and old building with old building quirks--it took us a minute or two to find the light switches--but to us that adds to the charm. The Charleston Visitors Center is about a three minute walk from the hotel. We took advantage of the DASH trolley, which stops right at the hotel door. We had one supper at the Swamp Fox Restaurant. The food was quite good and reasonably priced. The Starbucks in the lobby was convenient for a quick breakfast. We enjoyed our stay at the Francis Marion and have already recommended the hotel to friends.

Over the past 8 years, my girlfriend and I have stayed at many hotels across the country, and the Francis Marion definitely ranks as one our top 3! I put in a request for a king-size bed and a room on a high floor a few days before arrival, neither of which posed any problems. Our room had a northerly view of the back of the hotel and environs, but we didn't care, since we didn't plan on seeing Charleston from our hotel room! Plus, as it was in the back, we didn't experience street noise, a definite plus. The room was sizable, the bathroom was just fine (like many hotels, the hair-dryer wasn't the best, nor was there a full-length mirror-both of which applied to my girlfriend!), the staff was very friendly and helpful, the lobby is gorgeous. As to the smell noted in previous posts, we believe it to be the disinfectant used in cleaning the lobby, combined with the aroma from the fresh cuttings. Tea-olive was definitely in play. None of which bothered us. Yes, the elevators were on the slow side, but we lost no more than 1 minute because of that. If this is bothersome, remember that this is an 80 year old hotel, and to put in quicker elevators is not possible with the structure of the hotel. Honestly, if this is someone's biggest peeve, there is a Holiday Inn a block away, where a delightfully sterile experience can be had. We love Charleston, and most definitely plan on revisiting. When we do, we will absolutely stay at the Francis Marion.
