This was not our first choice, but The Savery and The Marriott were both sold out. I was not happy when I entered our "suite" to find an outdated room. This non-smoking room had cigarette burns in the carpet, worn and torn furniture, and outdated furnishings. I thought I was in the movie "1408". It also didn't help that the views out of our windows included two brick walls and railroad tracks. The room was clean, so that was a good thing.

I've stayed at this hotel twice--in the Fall of 2008 and July 2009. Both times my experience was bad. The first visit was recreational--I went to the Nebraska-Iowa State football game in Ames. The second visit was for business--a one-week education conference. Here are my three biggest complaints: 1. Temperature/paper thin walls. In the fall, I was freezing because our room didn't have any way to control the temperature and the heat was not activated for the Fall yet. The space heater they provided didn't help much. In the summer, the temperature was an issue again because you can't set the temperature. Cold air blows automatically and you can only turn it completely off or completely on. 2. Safety. During my second night at the hotel, the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night. However, it only went off on some of the floors above me so I was not notified. Other people from group that were staying on those floors where the alarm went off evacuated, but the people at the front desk didn't have a clue what was going on. They were told that it was probably just a false alarm. Everyone knows that you should treat any fire alarm like it's the real thing. How could they only evacuate some floors and not others? 3. Customer Service. I left a cell phone charger in my room and called the hotel twice--left messages with housekeeping both times. They waited three days to call me back and then I was told it would take 3-4 business days to receive my charger in the mail. I had them send it to my parents home where I was vacationing and the "3-4 business days" turned into 8! Weak.

We were surprised the morning that we checked out with a note under our door indicating that we would be charged an additional 10.00 for parking in the garage across the street (there is no parking lot). The ticket we were given in return to use in the parking garage came up as ""invalid"", so we had to pay an another 8.00 to exit the garage. (The hotel later removed the 10.00 charge after I called them.) Our suite had stained carpet, wallpaper that was peeling in a couple of spots, and a very cracked sink basin. However, the room was quite clean, spacious, and the bed was very comfortable. The lobby and the rest of the hotel are gorgeous- they've really done a wonderful job of preserving all the antique beauty of the building. They just need to carry that pride over into the guest rooms.

We're from Des Moines, and with gas prices as they are, decided to have a "get away" in our home town. Staying at The Hotel Fort Des Moines was like entering another world and another era. For a romantic get-away (we were celebrating our anniversary), I couldn't recommend a better hotel. We had the pool and hot-tub all to ourselves the entire weekend, and the pool level offers amazing vistas of the city.

Me and friends stayed here for a birthday. It was dirty, totally in need of being redone. Stains on curtains. I've stayed in better motel 6's. I was totally disappointed. I did like the shuttle bus they had and the staff was friendly. The rooms and hallways were just plan nasty. I would not recommend it at all.
