The beds were as hard as boards and the noise outside ( close to train station - lots of rolling suitcases on cobble streets at all hours) made a " good nights sleep" almost impossible - bathroom was great - dining room and rooftop were wonderful but the rooftop was not accessible unless the dining room was open - dining room staff and concierge were terrific.

I have stayed in this hotel a number of times over the years. The last was Nov of 2008. It is a "classic." It has been updated to meet the needs of today. The breakfast room has a fantastic view of the skyline of Florence. Certainly not 4 walls in the basement. The breakfast is good, the view is top notch. The central train station is 150 yards away and the Academia is a 15 min walk. There are numerous restaurants in the area. The price ranges cover them all. We arrived by train, checked in and walked literally around the back and found a half a dozen restaurants for lunch. We were there on a sunday night and the consierge sent us to a restaurant that he said had exceptional steaks. It was 10 mins away and down one flight of stairs, below street level. He was correct, the dinner was great.

Stayed 7 days. Location not too picturesque as it is across from train station, however, central to absolutely everything!. Bring your walking shoes. Decor is beautiful with a great old world flavor. Had a large, outside room on 3rd floor with a King size bed. Some street noise but not enough to bother with. The inside rooms might be quieter but we saw them and they were really small and cramped. A little wear around edges of bathroom but immaculately clean. Free buffet breakfast delicious (especially the coffee) with excellent variety. Views from rooftop garden excellent photo op. My only complaint was the wash cloths---there were none to be had. Perhaps this is cultural but I for one like to wash my face.

On check-in, the staff was very friendly and helpful. My wife and I stayed seven nights so the person at check-in gave us a free room upgrade. The room was extremely large even compared to US standards. The room had a 20 ft ornate wooden ceiling and a wooden parquet floor. It was wonderful. Free breakfast on the top floor restaurant was great - both for the food and the view of the city! This hotel had a great location being next to the train station and in the heart of the old city. We could walk to all the major city sites in just minutes. Plus, there are many fine restaurants within a minute walk from the hotel. Just a few steps from the hotel is an underground walkway to the train station which is nice since you can take day trips out of Florence to Pisa, Venice or any one of the many great Tuscan hill villages. Plus, it has a bus stop just outside the front door, too. 20 Euro cab ride from the airport to hotel but you can take a bus from the airport. My advice is to spring for the cab. It?s much faster. When I return to Florence, I will stay here again. It was wonderful. The architecture and art of this hotel matched the famed architecture and art of Florence.
