This week we stayed at the Palmer House and much to our surprise the room and lobby was exactly like the photos. The service was great, room was very comfortable, view wasn't great but we didn't care. The hotel is wonderfully located right next to the red line, the CTA loop train and Michigan Ave where we could catch any bus. We've never not had a car, so this was the first time using public transportation and had no problems. I would recommended visiting the CVS across the street and purchase a CTA pass. We will definately stay here again on our next visit.

Hotel is nice and historic. Location is okay, somewhat of a walk to heart of Michigan Ave, but close to Millenium Park. Felt like they nickel and dime their guests for pretty much everything from using the gym, high speed internet, to even the minor incidentals (toothpaste, razor, etc. W

I was upgraded to the Executive Floor on a recent 2-night stay, a Thursday & Friday because the rooms had not been sold. This was a real treat and meant spending much less on food: the exec floor had a truly generous complimentary continental breakfast, (fresh fruit, cereals, pastries, hard boiled eggs, coffee, several juices, yogurt) late afternoon hors d'oeuvres, evening dessert and open at all times with complimentary sodas, coffee, snacks and a tended bar. Nice! The hotel is comfortable, quiet and in a great location: within walking distance of a superb summer farmer's market on Daley Plaza, the CTA Blue Line train to the Bucktown/Wicker Park area, and the "L" to Lincoln Park. The Art Institute is literally out the front door--free admission Thurs 5-9 p.m. when I was there. Buy CTA visitors passes at the CVS Pharmacy at the corner. Only real disappointment: the pool and whirlpool have no place to change clothes and are not very inviting. The whirlpool only accommodates 4 adults and at that your feet are touching at times. Really needs an update. Otherwise, staff are very accommodating, the lobby is great for drinks and conversation and people watching. The only place to stay for me.

My stay at the Palmer House was not unpleasant in the least, but the room was smaller than a breadbox (okay, a little larger than that), the pedestal sink drained so slow I couldn't wash my hands or face without stopping to let it drain. The carpet was well worn. Other than those few things, the room was fine. The towels, linens and coverlet were clean and not showing wear, and everything else was fine. The staff seemed pleasant and helpful. I used the fitness center once - which was very nice. But, fair warning: it is an additional fee of * PER day (I happened to get that day free because the desk person was away from the desk and I didn't check in, so she was not able to give me the "lecture" about cost and all that intro info. Lucky for me, she told me it was "free today, but $18 tomorrow.") The hotel was convenient to the bus to sightseeing areas (museums, Navy Pier, etc). It is also within walking distance of other spots like the Willis (Sears) Tower and Michigan Avenue (depending on if you are willing to walk a bit). I would stay there again, but would ask for a larger room, if possible!

Palmer Hotel Review
08/24/2009Great hotel and location...poor concierge service, because they were extremely shorthanded which created long lines.
