What a deal!! One of the lowest priced hotels in Mazatlan with across the street from a nice beach (we upgraded to ocean view, and what a view it was, for an additional $10/night). Very clean, large room (try to get a corner room). Consistent hot water for showering. Beds are not plush and pillows a bit lumpy but we had good nights' sleep. Even though it's overlooking the Malecon and a busy street, the doors and windows did a good job of sealing off the noise. Within walking distance of the Machado, cathedral, market and theater. The downstairs restaurant, El Shrimp Bucket, offered nice breakfasts and dinners, inside or outdoors. The only things lacking that we'd have liked were a refrigerator and coffee pot. The pool area is very nice, but the water was quite cool.

I stayed at the La Siesta Nov 15-22. It is an older hotel across the street from the ocean. I stayed in an ocean view room which is one of the best ocean view deals in town. The room was good size, nice and clean with a nice balcony overlooking the ocean. The beach across the road was great for swimming. The waves were not too big and not too small and the water was warm. The hotel is about 4 blocks west of the Plaza Machado and opera house where there are many restaurants and much activity at night. There is a great massage place about 2 or 3 blocks east of the hotel. It is called the Aroma Spa and massages were only 150 pesos. You can take a green bus right in front of the hotel to the golden zone for only 8 pesos. The bus coming back does not drop you off in front of the hotel though. You need to get off at the Mercado by the cathedral and walk the 4 or 5 blocks. The hotel area is laid back and fairly quiet. There are good beer specials at the Belmar Hotel along with a ping pong table. The ocean view rooms are kind of noisy because the street runs right in front of the hotel and it is fairly busy with buses and trucks and cars between 630am-1030pm but there sure is an incredible sunset. Another fun thing to do is climb to the top of the lighthouse hill which is not far from the hotel. It provides a great view. I wish there was a place to rent a bike near the hotel. The hotel is probably best for travelers over 30 years old.

We spent two weeks at the Hotel Siesta and loved every minute of it except up to the last night when our room was entered and some items removed: a camera, a leathermans tool, a pair of sunglasses and a change purse with money (and the key to the safety lock box at reception which entailed calling a locksmith). There was no sign of a forced entry and I have to assume it was an inside job (maids? maintenance? who else would have had keys?). Thank goodness I had placed our passports, credit cards etc in the lock box (as strongly recommended by the management). The odd thing was the lady at reception showed no curiosity, interest, or even care that this had happened to us (no apologies or anything!). And as we were leaving that morning, there wasn't much follow-up we could do. So my recommendation is: Go ahead and stay there - it's a great spot - but keep all valuables (even down to cameras, i-pods, etc) in the lock box at all times.
