We stayed here four nights in the 4-star section of the hotel. The breakfast is too expensive to even consider, they charge you 15$ for internet every day, but the room is great. Once you are inside the walls of the compound, it is completely quiet, quite a change from out on the streets of Shanghai. A couple of blocks away we got our laundry done in 24 hours. There is a great bakery Paul's on the main drag Haihuai just near the hotel. You can walk to the museum, vegetarian restaurants, and even across town to the YuYang gardens. If you are crazy enough to take the subway, it stops almost right beside the hotel (Shaanxi Street S) We will be staying here again. Shanghai is expensive, you could be paying near American prices for dinner etc. But when you get there you will realize why, Shanghai is an expensive city.

Glorious step back into Old Shanghai. The old buidlings have been beautifully restored. Bathrooms are first rate but the rooms in the old north building are showing their age. The newer garden view rooms in the south building are beautiuflly done and very spacious. The location in the old French concession is in one of Shanghai's prime upscale shopping and dining areas. The spacious lawns and the location off the street are a real treat in the crowded noisy city. Don't look for great western food here, only adequate but the Shanghai restaurant at the top of the north building offers great Shanghai food at great prices. The staff here is friendly and helpful with good English skills. Unlike a lot places the staff are mostly local Shanghainese so you will get some flavor of the local people. .
