  It's a pleasant old hotel just off Berkeley campus. The room was decent size, with entertainment center and minibar. The bathroom had no surfaces to place toiletries, but everything worked and the shower was fine. There was a heat wave that weekend, and the room was an oven, despite the ceiling fan and a box fan provided by the hotel. The electricity serving the entertainment center and desk went on and off, as did the celing fan. We were told they could not fix it, so we were comped a breakfast (very nice dining room, by the way). We were on the sixth floor, which had an airconditioned reception room. By 8AM there was no caffeinated coffe and no cups or plates of any kind, with trash spilling out of the garbage. This was repeated the next day. I've seen better fare and better service at low end Express hotels. The staff was generally friendly and helpful, but between the room problems and lack of attention to facilities, I'd pass on returning.

  I chose Hotel Durant for its convenient location to UC-Berkeley. The staff was consistenly friendly & helpful: the hotel was very good about accomodating me for my early arrival. However, overall I found the hotel overpriced: the room (supposedly a double) was incredibly cramped and the layout was quirky: shower & toilet in bathroom, while the sink was in main room. The decor could use some updating: my room had a decidedly 50s/60s feel. The plumbing also needs upgrading: the water temperature fluctuated uncontrollably during morning showers. The restaurant was fine, but again somewhat overpriced, especially for breakfast.

  Several reviewers have commented on the lack of AC and the noise. AC was not an issue as the windows open very wide and it almost always cools off in the evening. The hotel was a bit noisy and yes, you can hear fellow guests. That's what you get when you stay in an older hotel. Our room was small and adequately equipped. The staff was excellent and accomodating. We will definately keep Hotel Durant in our travel folder.
