This hotel has very cool design and atmosphere. Good furnishings and beds. Unfortunately that's where coolness stops. We stayed 3 nights and despite the fact that the hotel was not particularly busy they gave us a tiny room. Probably because we were on a promotional deal. You could hear the person in the next room perfectly, unfortunately. We had a "courtyard view" which was three brick walls towering over a roof covered in air handlers. Not a courtyard. Skip the restaurant it is really mediocre. We had room service the first night. The crabcake was inedible. It smelled like latex paint. Our dinner the next night was poorly served and again the food was poor. The lobby staff seemed totally oblivious most of the time and the doormen were useless. In 3 days they never opened a door or offered to help with luggage. They also couldn't get us a cab. I'm not sure why they were there. The bar service was bad also. The W is all show but no go. It's a shame because it is a cool concept.

Just spent a weekend with my girlfriends from college in chicago (two currently live in the city, but to step up our trip we thought we would make it more our own, we would stay in a hotel). We chose the W City Center Chicago, it was definately less than what we expected. We had considerably small room, with far less outlets for our needs(consider hair dryers, straighteners, phone chargers, iron etc. The service was okay at best and to be quite frank, they were all very snobby. I asked directions to lake shore drive (driving) and the lady we spoke with gave me a very sarcastic tone with her response, as if it were common knowledge how to navigate the city. This seems like a very business oriented hotel; meaning if you are a big time business man/woman then they seem to care what your needs are, and of course, if you can foot a pretty steep bill in addition. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to the Chicago area. Their are plenty of other places with better service, larger rooms and friendlier staff. Although the decor is swanky and hip, that might be the only benefit to staying here. GOOD LUCK!

When we checked in, we were given an upgrade to a larger room by the very attentive front desk staff. That is where the good stopped with our stay at this hotel. We were on the 8th floor overlooking Adams St and were at first pleased with the room. Then, the first Elevated Train came by. It was so loud that the only way to drown it out was to turn the fan on high. We then went into the bathroom where we found a used eyelash curler laying on the floor under the sink. In the room, we were surprised at the relatively old, non-HD TV with a remote that barely worked. What really made me upset though was the $31.70 mini bar charge that appeared on my checking account statement later that week. At no point did we use anything from the mini bar. Overall, a terrible stay at a terrible property.

I was extremely disappointed with both the room and the service at the hotel. When I arrived, I was offered an ""upgrade"" to a king room (I requested a king) but it was a smoking room. I declined and was given what was essentially a converted storage closet. The room was so crammed you had to walk sideways to get past the bed to the dresser, and the ceiling was a drop ceiling about 8' high. Since this room was clearly unacceptable (especially since I didn't get much if anything of a bargain on rates) I decided to take the ""upgrade"" to the smoking room. The room was fine, but the AC was so loud I decided to sleep with the windows open instead (it was a cool night). That was fine except for the EL which ran past every few minutes. Even my coworkers who kept the windows closed complained. Now we get to service. My flight was delayed and I arrived at the hotel about 10 PM. The restaurant stops seating guests at 10 PM so I was relegated to the bar for appetizers. Some coworkers stopped by a short while later and tried to order, but they stop serving that food at 11 (it was exactly 11 and nobody wanted to go out of their way to take some hummus out of the fridge). Come 11:45 it was last call. There was a large party next to us, and they realized they were one drink short and tried ordering another at 11:46 only to be flatly rejected. I've stayed at many W's and this was by far the worst. Not sure how they get away with it.
