Just returned from a stay with Howard Johnson Dowtown Tampa and it was the best experience we have ever had with a hotel. The front desk was friendly and courteous, the hotel shuttle staff were friendly and extremely accomodating and even the food servers and bartender in the hotel restaurant were very friendly and genuine. We were there to take a cruise which did not leave until 4:00 PM on Sunday. The hotel staff allowed us a late check-out (everyone known you can't get on the ship until about 1:00 and most check-out times are 11:00 AM). We stayed with them again a couple of nights after our cruise returned - again being allowed a late check out because our flight did not leave until 4:30 PM. We can not say enough good things about this hotel. It is an older building right in the heart of downtown Tampa but very well maintained. Our rooms were very clean, well stocked and very comfortable. They were also very quiet - we never heard a car horn or emergency vehicle or any other disturbing noises. Easy walking distance to all the fun stuff. Could not recommend this hotel any higher!

As a somewhat frequent traveler, I found my stay at the Howard Johnson's to be less than stellar. We were greeted after a hectic day of travel by a gal that was not terribly friendly. Although she did her "job" fine her greeting regarding our arrival was less than enthusiastic. Fairly matter of fact and pointed. Although, other front desk personel, Clark and the shuttle drivers were accomodating and more of the "customer service calliber" I've come to expect. Our room, although clean had some issues. Namely, the bathroom sink had a significant tilt and water puddled in it each time used, and never emptied. The vending on our floor was lacking and the ice machine had (milk?) or something poured in/on it for the 3 days we were there. We dined on site for one breakfast - $* buffet - a very good price, but limited selection of items. Highlight, $* Gray Goose Martini's on Monday night! Beds were comfy, but nothing to rave about. Housekeeping, prompt and efficient.

The hotel is away from the main Riverfront area. Its as far north as one can get, which means you are not close to the Trolley and you really can't walk anywhere. The room was nice enough, king size bed was great! Unfortunately, not much else about the hotel was great. To get to the pool you have to go up then around a corridor, then down again.. And the corridor air conditioning was never on, it seemed. Also, bring your own towels, the ones you get in the room or pool are thin, raggety and not very big. The hotel's breakfast was a bit if a rip off. Its a not very inspiring buffet and it cost 11 bucks! Take a ride a few blocks away to the First Watch, the breakfast was very nice, people were very friendly and plenty of selections for under 8 bucks.
