My husband I stayed at the New Harbor Service Apartments from Sept. 9th- 15th. This was not our first trip to China. This hotel was one of the best ones we have stayed at. First, remember if you travel to a country that is vastly different from your culture and there are just some things you are going to have to get used to. The smells, sounds and the way the people react to you if you can’t speak their language. Chinese people are very friendly. If you just give a smile and are kind they will respond kindly back to you. Remember you are the foreigner now. Everything we needed was available to us at the hotel. If you want a 1, 2 or 3 bedroom it is available with a good size refrigerator and gas stove top. If you want to cook you can rent the utensils from the hotel. Let them know when you check in. There are 2 sizes of the 1 bedroom. If you are going to stay a few days and only need a 1 bedroom get the larger of the 2 for no extra charge. It was very roomy. The front desk has English speakers, (not great, but they will try to help you as best they can) and if you think that standing there at the desk and making rude comments is appropriate, don’t. They may not be able to speak or completely understand everything you are saying, but they can understand a lot. So be kind!!! They aren’t stupid. Just use common words and speak slowly (try learning their language). We were able to exchange money very easily. Don’t bring travels checks, it is hard in some hotels to get them cashed and some times you have to go to a bank. This could take several hours (believe me, we have tried). Bring cash and keep it on a money belt on you at all the times. We needed airline tickets to travel to another city and they accommodated us with a smile and efficiency. I needed an iron and ironing board. I called the desk and asked if the person who answered spoke English, and she was able to help me. They have an in-house as well as a self service laundry on the 3rd floor. It was very convenient for us to wash 2 loads of clothes and dry 1 for less than $*USD. Just outside the hotel is a small grocery store and you can get most things you need. McDonalds and KFC are also very close by (just a 5 minute walk). If you want to eat at the hotel, the restaurant is very good. The menus have English, so try some new foods. There are a number of Starbucks close as well if you need a regular coffee fix. If you are in the mood for some shopping, ask the front desk for directions to “The Nanjing Walking Street” a huge street with every kind of shop possible. It’s near People Square and you will love it. Hope you enjoy this hotel as much as we did.

Three adults stayed for seven nights in September 2008 in 2 BR delux unit and we were all very pleased. The staff were friendly and quick to address our needs. Exercise room and pool are great place to relief stresses. Self service laundry is available on the third floor or if you wish, laundry room staff can do all the washing for you for a very reasonable fee. The best feature of course is the large living room which is great to meet guests which we did. The neighbourhood street is not the best but it is exciting, safe and busting with local commercial activities. Breakfast is delicious and there are 2 in house restaurants on the first floor. This is a great hotel for the price and definitely a place for one to consider if you are travelling as a family or group.

For the price, the hotel was okay. The location was a little difficult. The taxi driver missed it a couple of times. The room had a wooden floor, so a little cold on the feet. No work desk, just the living room dining table. A huge crack between the bathroom door and the living room. Had to watch my step so I didn't stub my toe. The front desk had passable english. If you are familiar with Shanghai, then it's no problem. For a first timer, getting recommendations from hotel may be a little difficult. My main gripe. Reservation and cancellation. Reserved the hotel through Travel agency. Reserved the hotel for 8 nights. (stay 5 nights, get 1 free). But due to business reasons, had to check out early. Called Travel agency to cancel, but reps had difficulty contacting hotel. Talked to hotel, (6:30 p.m.) the sales manager was already out. Couldn't get the hotel to call Travel agency till the next day 9:00 a.m. However, I checked out by 7:00 a.m. After I got back from the trip, called travel agency, the rep told me company policy says I can't get a refund. Totally different from what the previous rep told me. Also, hotel never called to say that I had checked out. Working to get my refund. If I can't get it, that's 4 nights for the price of 8. Recommend call the hotel directly to reserve, pay when you get there. Most china hotels, you don't credit card to reserve. Only a name and phone number. I personally will not stay here again. For a little bit more, there are a lot of hotels providing suites with better service and better locations.

I stayed here with my wife and 3 kids in a 2 bedroom suite. Although the hotel is not located in a good street, it is, nevertheless, close to the main attractions of Shanghai. Rooms are clean and has a large living room which is ideal for those traveling with children. The bathroom is quite small though. This place is better than a standard hotel room where we are cramped in one room. The staff can understand English fairly well.
