The absolute worst thing about the place was the food- nasty and the same thing over and over. The water sports are not available, ever. There is high pressure sales everywhere you turn. The rooms are tiny. The internet barely trickled when it would work. Some of the bartenders act like the drinks are coming out of their pocket. I got food poisoning and was left to fend for myself for the last two days. No employees cared- they just chuckled about it.Don't look at the food next door. If you do, you will be depressed. The beach is awful. The grounds are nice. The afternoon bartender at the pool that is in his 40's is great! Playacar is nice and you should see the small ruins there, first before heading to a bigger site.

The food was horrible....I'll say it again, the food was horrible!!! It was basically all you can eat bad food.....I am not a picky eater, but it was such a waste of money staying here. The room had a smell, and the bed was on the hard side. There were other little things that we didn't like, but those are the big things...don't stay here, it's not worth it at all...

I just returned from 5 days at The Reef. I think this was the worst hotel I have ever stayed at in my life. Please, invest in a better hotel for the extra. There are four problems with The Reef: the sales staff, the rooms, the food, and the lack of travel agent representatives. When we first arrived we were cut off from making our way to the registration desk by Brandon. Many have written about a pushy American kid--well, his name is Brandon and he is an obnoxious jerk. He immediately tried to usher us away from checking in so that he could be our "concierge" at The Reef. All he was doing was trying to sell timeshares at In addition to the pushy salespeople, you will be greeted by the following in your room: cockroaches, spiders, ants, stained sheets, and food and drink stained walls. You may be visiting Mexico hoping to take in an array of local cuisine. Not here though--you will find a buffet of over-cooked American food: pizza, fries, fried chicken, etc. Of the 5 days we were there, we ate one lunch which was better than blah. We had to wait in line all the time for snacks and drinks. There are no onsite travel representatives, so you have to hope they keep their appointments so you can schedule excursions. We were stood up twice. We also were unable to schedule our return trip to the airport until after 6pm the night before our return flight. We were wondering if we were ever going to be able to get back home. The beach is wonderful and the wait staff was extremely sweet (although seriously overworked).

Just unbelievable. Restaurants were closed during the 5 night stay and staff was not working in bars, etc. Very disappointing. Needs updating, if you are looking for bargain basement---you've found it with this spot. Please spend extra and get a little more, this all-inclusive is lacking. Beach is nice, though. Good spot if you are not in the line of the jet ski men. Disappointing!

My boyfriend and I stayed 8 days at the Reef and we both loved it! We did not spend much time in the room, but it was very clean and comfortable. The landscaping among the buildings was beautiful! There were dozens of different plants and trees along the walk ways which really added to the ambiance of the resort. All of the employees were friendly and helpful. This was at the height of the swine flu scare and it appeared that they took every precaution to prevent illness. I saw a lot of complaints about food, but I had no issues. Breakfast was excellent! We ate lunch at the snack bar most days which was very tasty and had many choices. Dinner at the buffet was also good. The fish was amazing! Every meal had fresh fruit and veggie choices so I was able to have a balanced meal every time. We also ate dinner at the Mexican and Italian restaurants which were both exceptional. The pools were always clean and the beach was gorgeous. The sandbags actually served as a mini coral reef, attracting several different species of fish. We rented snorkel gear (free) and spent a lot of time snorkeling around them. I highly recommend the AllTourNative Mayan encounter tour to Coba. The company donates a significant portion of money to the Mayan people. We rappelled, zip-lined, canoed, hiked, ate a traditional Mayan mean and climbed the highest pyramid in the Yucatan. Plus, it was amazing to see the native people. Also, go to Cozumel, rent a scooter and drive around the island. We ate fresh caught seafood at Chen Rio and it was the BEST seafood I have ever had! Dirt-cheap and OUTSTANDING quality. The scenery in Cozumel is also beautiful, very different from Playa.
