The real beauty of the Montcada Hotel is where it is located. Right within the "old town" of Barcelona and accessible to buses, subway and walking distance to La Rambla and the marina. The service staff is friendly and helpful and the everything was easy to do. The room we had with a double bed was small by America standards but quite adequate by European standards. Bathroom was equipped with a full host of toiletries and a nice little mini bar. Our plan had the breakfast buffet included and it was a welcome way to start the day with eggs and a good assortment of fruit, juices, cereals, bread, meat and cheeses and a wonderful machine that made different kinds of coffee. If I had a complaint at all it was not one the hotel could address. One side of the hotel is on an alley and for the most part there is people and noise. We opened our window to cool down the room at night and every sound was carried into our room. But that is the price you pay when to stay at such a central location. Overall we had a good impression and stayed 6 nights. The staff was great and the accommodations very easy to deal with. You must go up to the roof top and see the city.

I am not sure where these last two reviewers stayed! The staff was excellent and spoke english fluently and were always willing to assist us. It is true that when you arrive before check out time you must wait for a room to be cleaned and made available as you would at any hotel. The room was clean and well organized and the air conditioner worked well and most importantly since the hotel is located downtown very quiet. We also found the rooftop deck to be a very pleasant area to watch the sunset. Our 15 day visit at the Hotel Montcada was wonderful.

This was the worst hotel we have ever stayed at. The customer service could not have gotten worse. The front desk staff did not speak English or if they did it was not good English. Now don't get me wrong I understand that we were staying in Barcelona where the natural language is Spanish and Catalan, however this hotel was in the heart of a very large city, you would think that they would at least have one person on each shift that speaks English a little better than this staff did. The staff made us wait in the lobby until the room was clean, which we could not understand why it took so long to get it cleaned. When we finally got to the room it was very small, very hot and stuffy. It had no bathtub, just a shower and the floor was dirty-so much for them cleaning it while we waited. When I went to complain they did nothing except send the super/handyman to our room. He disrupted us to clean the air filter for the AC, which we appreciated, however that should have been done way before we got there and it was not. We were very tired and we could not sleep because it was soo HOT. I have never been to a hotel where the room was hot when you arrived. During our stay the cleaning staff always cleaned our room at the most inconvenient times and it was very annoying. We had to ask for toilet paper more than once, they broke a glass in our room and we had to ask them to clean it up, which we should not have had to do, and the rooftop terrace smelled like diarrhea almost every day. It was as if they were not accommodating.

We reserved and paid for two rooms on our reservation.Got to hotel at 3PM were told that we only had one room.I showed them reservation form and they agreed we had two rooms but that only one would be a double and the other a single even though we paid for two doubles. They would not credit us for there mistake. They told us the rooms were not ready to ""come back later"".Rooms were not ready when we came back at 6PM had to wait until about 6:30 to get in the rooms. The rooftop terrace was closed for an event so it was not available for us to use. We had an early flight the next morning and were told that breakfast began at 7Am.We went at 7Am and were told it would not be ready for 15-30 minutes. The computer was in spanish and could not be switched to english so we could not print boarding passes. The only good thing I can say about this hotel is the location but there are many nice hotels in the area. I would never stay here or recommend this hotel again.

Very happy with our choice of hotel. Just across the street from an ancient cathedral built on the original Roman walls adjoining a bit of Roman aquaduct, convenient to bakeries, wine shops, coffee shops, and La Rambla, right on the edge of the Gothic area with boutiques, churches, plazas and Museu Picasso just down the winding alleys. Our room was attractive and comfortable with casement windows, lovely marble bathroom w/ bidet, big shower, some rooms have a tub. Breakfast is a bit pricey but well worth it, including lots of fresh fruit, juices, pastries, great cafe con leche. Complementary glass of cava on check-in. We didn't try dinner. The rooftop bar was closed until later in the season, but we could have ordered up whatever we wanted and there was plenty of seating; the view is amazing and not to be missed. Street's a bit noisy at night, but we spent all day walking around, so it didn't keep us awake. No police presence at night anywhere in the city, and I recommend you take main streets between the hotel and La Rambla at night to avoid the alleys' loiterers. The hotel offers a tour of the old city, which we didn't need as we had a local friend, and you can purchase a picnic lunch any time. Most front desk folks were friendly and helpful; just don't let them call you a cab or you'll discover you pay extra. We were surprised we could not exchange our money for Euros at the hotel, but banks are close by, just inconvenient on a weekend. We'd stay there again, no question.
