An English major graduate from Cornell University, Maher began his career
honing his act during the '80s on the New York club scene. Talk Show Host,
Stand-up Comic and Author debuted on Comedy Central, with "Politically
Incorrect", where celebrity guests discussed political issues of the day, but
with a sense of humor and few constraints. Maher's perspective was (and still
remains) mostly libertarian, and his show was bizarrely open-minded by
by mainstream network TV standards, with guests ranging from pinkos to the
conservative extreme. The show jumped from cable TV to the network in 1997
ending in 2002. Maher quickly started a similar show on HBO, "Real Time with
Bill Maher", which airs live weekly. Maher was born in New York and raised in
New Jersey. He now resides in Los Angeles.
